The laboratory is equipped with instrumentation for measuring physical properties of materials

FTIR – Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy

This method enables to identify groups of atoms or molecules in the material. The material is exposed to light in the Infrared wavelength, and adsorbs part of the light. The result is absorbance (or transmittance) spectrum of the material. Different groups of atoms or molecules adsorb light at different wavelengths; therefore, typical spectrum can be obtain for each material.

Additionally, this method enables to measure optical transparency of IR devices, reflectance of IR mirrors and more.

The laboratory is equipped with Equinox 55 (Bruker) FTIR, with the following parameters:

  • Wavelength range: 370-500 cm-1
  • Resolution: 0.5 cm-1
  • Working temperature: 80-400K
  • Types of samples: solid, powder, thin films, liquid, gas
  • Operation mode: Transmission, Reflection, ATR

The lab is equipped with Bruker database with common FTIR spectra and data analysis software.

Thermal Gravimetric Analyzer TGA

This method enables to measure Mass- loss as a function of temperature, and is useful for analysis of volatile materials in high resolution, fast separation between organic and inorganic components, quantitative analysis of inorganic fillers or pigments in organic matrix, determination of thermal stability of materials and mass-loss profiles as result of decomposition.

The laboratory is equipped with TGA Q-500 (TA Instruments) with the following parameters:

Temperature range: 25-1100 ⁰C

  • Sensitivity: 0.1 µg
  • Resolution: 0.01 µg
  • IR heating
  • Isothermal accuracy: +/-1⁰C
  • Ballistic heating: 2000 ⁰C/min
  • Heating range: 0.1-500 ⁰C/min
  • Automatic samples changer: 25 samples
  • Hi-Res TGATM and Modulated TGATM are Included

Differential Scanning Calorimeter – DSC

This method enables to measure the change in heat capacity as a function of temperature. It is used mostly to classify chemical reactions, such as melting temperature, glass transition temperature, polymerization, crystallization, sulfur vulcanization, decomposition, heat capacity, chemical reactions.

The laboratory is equipped with DSC LabSys 131 (SETARAM) with the following parameters:

  • Temperature range: 25-1600 ⁰C
  • Types of samples: powders, liquids
  • Heating rate: 0.01-30 ⁰C /min
  • Ballistic heating: 150 ⁰C/min
  • Sensitivity: 0.01 mkW

The lab is equipped with data analysis software.

Porosimetry – Surface area and porosity are important physical properties that influence the quality and utility of many materials and products. Therefore, it is critically important that these characteristics be accurately determined and controlled. Likewise, knowledge of surface area and especially porosity often is an important key to understanding the formation, structure, and potential application of many natural materials.

The Physical Properties Lab is equipped with surface area and porosity analyzers that delivers excellent performance and fast analysis: 3Flex, TriStar and AccuPic (Micromeritics).

3Flex Surface Characterization Analyzer is a fully automated three-station instrument capable of high-performance physisorption and chemisorption analysis with superior accuracy, resolution, and data reduction.

Types of samples that can be measured are powders, foams, bulk samples. Sample size is up to 1 cm diameter. Pore diameter distribution (mesopore to micropore) and chemical activity of the sample material can be measured. The experiments can be performed in high-temperature furnace (up to 1100⁰C) with quick and accurate ramp rates or at liquid nitrogen temperature. The gases that can be used during the measurement are N2, He, Kr, CO, CO2, H2 for chemisorption measurements
