Research in the MEMSM lab spans basic materials properties and their application, and is focused on understanding the interface between two properties. Significant attention will be focused on elastically mediated coupling between electrical and magnetic phenomena – the magnetoelectric effect. We will gain fundamental knowledge about a wide range of materials to utilize in beneficial and needed applications. This will include piezoelectric (eletro-mechanical coupling) and magnetoelectric (magnetic-electrical coupling) properties in polymers, biomaterials and semiconductors for sensing and actuation in future electronics as well as biocompatible and implantable devices.
