Graphene inks have been prepared for various printing methods using polymers as dispersing agents and viscosity modifiers. However, the removal of the polymers in benign environments after printing remains a challenge, which is important to streamline the post-process of printed graphene and extend the substrate and material compatibility. In this talk, the development of aerosol-jet printable graphene inks will be discussed employing polypropylene carbonate (PPC) as a dispersing agent. Graphene is prepared from graphite with PPC by liquid-phase exfoliation, where PPC improves the dispersion stability of graphene in organic solvents and the exfoliation yield. In particular, the improvement is observed more significantly for solvents with low surface tension, enabling the formulation of low-surface-tension graphene inks to facilitate the ink atomization for aerosol-jet printing and consequently allow excellent printability of graphene. Furthermore, the low decomposition temperature of PPC eases the removal of the stabilizing polymers in printed graphene, achieving high electrical conductivity at mild post-processing temperature and compatibility with temperature-sensitive substrates, such as paper. Finally, using the graphene/PPC inks, fully-printed graphene micro-supercapacitors are fabricated on paper with high areal capacitance, cycling stability, and mechanical resilience against bending deformation, demonstrating its practical application potential for energy storage.
