Sintering Ceramics within 1 second: Electric field assisted sintering mechanisms and technological prospects

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) and flash sintering (FS) are recent advancements in the electric field assisted sintering techniques, through which the nanoparticle ceramic compacts are densified within a few seconds to tens of minutes. The lecture will review the basics of the two techniques, their characteristics and the underlying mechanisms responsible for the rapid kinetics of these processes. The novel reaction flash sintering (RFS) technique and its mechanism will be introduced as a revolutionary fabrication technology.
