Memristors: The Future of Non-Volatile Memory or Perhaps Even More?

Conventional memory technologies, such as SRAM, DRAM and Flash, suffer from different reliability and cost issues. Their limitations have led to an increased effort in finding replacements. Most of those replacements are based on devices, collectively called as memristors, which store information in the form of resistance. Memristors come in many flavors,  varying in their physical mechanism and properties, but all of them are fundamentally different than conventional memory technologies therefore offer unique behavior that opening the door for additional interesting applications.

In this talk, I will describe the fundamental characteristics of memristive technologies and how they provide solutions to today’s problems in  memory. Then, I will discuss how memristors can be used also for other attractive applications, such as digital and analog circuits, neuromorphic computing, hardware security and more. I will show how memristors can solve the core limitations in modern computing – the high cost of data movement.
