Corrosion protection of steel by novel Zn-Mg and Zn-Al-Mg coatings

In past two decades, Japanese and later on European steel makers developed a new family of zinc-based coatings for steel protection. Magnesium addition improves significantly corrosion resistance of the coatings allowing for coating reduction or longer lifetime. Zn-Mg and Zn-Al-Mg products gain market shares in the building, home appliance and automotive industries. The seminar will focus on the underlying corrosion mechanisms, optimal application conditions in different environments and the role of the coating microstructure. Results of numerous laboratory and field studies will be discussed.
