Dr. Murali Kumarasamy

Dr. Murali Kumarasamy

In 2005, Murali received a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) degree from The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai, India; he obtained Master’s (M.Pharm) in Pharmaceutical chemistry from the same University. In 2010 he received a research grant that allowed him to work with the research group of Prof. Ciara O’ Sullivan  of  Nano-biotechnology and Bio analysis group, University of Rovira I Virgili Tarragona, Spain, As a research fellow, Murali conducted a study in the “Optimization of separation and isolation of circulating cell-free fetal DNA for non-invasive prenatal diagnosis”. This work led him move to Laboratory of Cellular and Developmental Neurobiology, Institute of Experimental Medicine, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, where he has joined the far larger multidisciplinary European Commission FP7 Marie Curie consortium of NanoTOES (http://nanotoes.sbg.ac.at) and his interdisciplinary doctoral thesis investigated the “Interaction of Nanoparticles with neural stem-and tissue-type cells”. As a Marie-Curie fellow, he visited and made short-time research at NILU – Norwegian Institute for Air Research (Norway), at Bayer Technology Services GmbH (Germany) at Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia, ICN2 (Spain), at Centre for BioNano Interactions, UCD (Ireland), and at University of Namur (Belgium).In 2015 he obtained Doctorate in Theoretical medicine from Doctoral School of Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. After his PhD he spent few months at the Magneto-Optical Spectroscopy laboratory, Budapest University of Technology and Economics under Prof. Dr. István Kézsmárki, working on the “Magneto-optical diagnosis of malaria” he then moved back to India performed his postdoctoral training through Animal Biotechnology Career Enhancement Programme (ABCEP) at the Translational Research Platform for Veterinary Biologicals (TRPVB), TANUVAS and then he spent at the Centre of Nanotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee as a Post-doctoral fellow. In January 2017, he joined in Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Nanomaterials Science, Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology “Supported in part at the Technion by a fellowship of the Israel Council for Higher Education fellowship for the period of October 2016-September 2019. His current investigation focuses on “the different novel nanodrug delivery systems to target antitumorals to the central nervous system” (CNS).

Graduate students

Nataliya_KuplennikNataliya Kuplennik, Ph.D.

Natalyia got a degree in Chemical Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering of Technion (cum laude, 2012) and a M.Sc. in Polymer Engineering in the same institution under the supervision of Prof. Moshe Narkis (2015). Her graduate project focused on the production and characterization of antimicrobial polymeric films for packaging. She joined the group of Prof. Alejandro Sosnik in July 2015 to pursue the Ph.D.. In this context, she is investigating new drug nanocarriers for the targeting of active compounds to the brain in a collaborative project with Prof. Robert Steinfeld of the Universitätsmedizin Göttingen (Germany).

Inbal_Schlachet

Inbar Schlachet, Ph.D. (fast track)

Inbar graduated as a Biochemical Engineer at the Technion in 2014. Her graduation project in Prof. Gideon Grader’s research group dealt with Auto ignition temperature measurements for a nitrogen-based alternative fuel. She joined the group of Prof. Alejandro Sosnik in March 2015 to pursue the M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering and in 2016 progressed to the direct-track Ph.D. program. Her project focuses on the exploration of novel self-assembly molecules and their tracking employing in vitro models and the targeting of the central nervous system by the intranasal route.

alexandra_bukchinAlexandra Bukchin, Ph.D.

Alexandra received a double degree in Materials Engineering and Chemistry at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (2014, Technion). She worked in the group of Prof. Alejandro Sosnik as undergraduate student in the period June-September 2014 and joined it in October 2014 to pursue the M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering that completed in November 2016. She stayed in the lab for the PhD. Her project investigates novel nano-drug delivery systems to target antitumoral drugs to the central nervous system by exploiting shuttle peptides.

doaa_abu_salehDoaa Abu Saleh, Ph.D.

Doaa got a degree in Chemical Engineering at the Department of Chemical Engineering (2014, Technion). She did a research project on polymers anti-fogs in the laboratory of Prof. Moshe Narkis. She joined the group of Prof. Alejandro Sosnik in October 2014 to pursue the M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering that completed in November 2016. She stayed in the lab for the Ph.D. Her project focuses on the investigation of novel organic-inorganic hybrid nanomaterials for biomedical applications.

Chen Moshe, Ph.D. (fast track)

Chen obtained a double degree in Materials Engineering and Chemistry at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Technion. In 2015, she conducted the “final degree project” in synthesis and characterization of novel mucoadhesive polymeric micelles under the supervision of Prof. Alejandro Sosnik. In March 2016, she joined the Sosnik’s group for the M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering and after three semesters, she progressed to the Ph.D. fast track program. She is investigating the synthesis of novel mucoadhesive polymeric micelles made of poly(vinyl alcohol) and their potential in active drug targeting.

Inbar Schreiber-Livneh, Ph.D.

Inbar finished her B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering at Technion in 2014 and continued to M.Sc. in Materials Engineering at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (Technion) under the supervision of Prof. Michael Silverstein. Her research topic was porous polymeric materials. U[on graduation in 2017, she joined the interdepartmental Ph.D. program in Nanoscience and Natotechnology at the Russell Berrie Nanotechnology Institute of Technion under the supervision of Profs. Dedi (David) Meiri (Department of Biology) and Alejandro Sosnik (Department of Materials Science and Engineering). Her project aims to design novel polymeric biomaterials employing cannabinoids as building blocks and utilize them as delivery platforms for the release of active compounds available in different Cannabis species.

roni_sverdlovRoni Sverdlov Arzi, Ph.D.

Roni obtained a double degree in Materials Engineering and Chemistry at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the Technion in 2016. In addition, between 2013-2016, she worked as a research and development assistant in the product research unit (PRU) at Teva Pharmaceutical Industries. After obtaining the M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Alejandro Sosnik, she was formally accepted to the Ph.D. program. She investigates the production of pure drug nanoparticles for intranasal targeting of the central nervous system in pediatric brain tumors.

Ella Peled, Ph.D.

Ella obtained a B.Sc. in Biology from the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in 2014 and M.Sc. in Biology at Technion under the supervision of Prof. Dedi Meiri in 2017. Her project investigated the role of cannabinoid receptors in the anti-tumor effects of Cannabis in vitro. In early 2018, she joined the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Nanomaterials Science to pursue her Ph.D. studies. Ella investigates a novel actively targeted nano-drug delivery system for the localized treatment of inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

Anna Zaritsky, M.Sc.

Anna obtained a double degree in Materials Engineering and Chemistry at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Technion. In March 2016, she joined the Sosnik’s group for the M.E. in Materials Science and Engineering in September 2017, she moved to the M.Sc. program. She is investigating novel sugared polymeric micelles for active targeting to sugar-avid tumors.

Vladi-Kushnirov–MelnitzerVladi Kushnirov–Melnitzer, M.Sc.

Vladi obtained a double degree in Materials Engineering and Chemistry at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Technion. He conducted the “final degree project” in the laboratory of Distinguished Prof. Dan Shechtman in collaboration with The Israel Institute of Metals. The topic of his project is “Biodegradable iron alloys for biomedical applications”. Vladi joined the Sosnik’s group as undergraduate student in October 2014 and stayed for the M.Sc. in Materials Science and Engineering beginning October 2016. He investigates the synthesis of novel polymer-ceramic hybrid nanobiomaterials for drug delivery.
