The Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering, mourns the death of Prof. Emeritus Elazar Gutmanas, and participates in the heavy sorrow of the family.
Professor Gutmanas was severely injured in an accident that occurred in his laboratory on the eve of Sukkot. The circumstances of the accident are now under investigation.
Professor Gutmanas joined the Technion in 1974, a few months after he immigrated to Israel from the USSR, and joined the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering, and was a faculty member throughout his years in the Technion.
During this period Prof. Gutmanas supervised dozens of students of advanced degrees, published over a hundred articles in scientific journals and a took part in many international meetings. He served as a guest scientist at the Max Planck Institute and held a chair under the name of Zandman in ceramic materials.
Professor Gutmanas’s dedication to science and advancement of human knowledge led him to continue his research work even after he retired and became Professor emeritus. In this he was a model for all of us.
