The quest for sustainability in electrochemical energy conversion has motivated the rational design of sustainable active materials. Colloidal syntheses are very versatile and well adapted to the synthesis of complex catalysts. In this lecture, we shall present our recent advances in the different synthetic pathways towards metallic nanoparticles from organometallic and metal-organic precursors. These synthetic routes lead to an excellent control on the size, shape and metallic atomic distribution inside the nanoparticles. These metal nanoparticles have been applied in fuel cells, electrolyzers, batteries and sensors.
