The Mechanism of Research at a Research University (Living With Ethics)

events hall

Prof. Wayne D. Kaplan

Research with the framework of a research university is a convoluted process, which can be complicated for the unaware. This is due to the intrinsic conflicts of interest between those that fund research, those that own the results, those that conceptualize the research program, and those that conduct the research itself. All of this seems a rather daunting situation when we are simply trying to understand something regarding the scientific nature of materials. This lecture will present and define the different aspects of scientific research, from the nature of funding sources and through issues related to publication rights and intellectual property (IP) ownership, and will hopefully provide a pragmatic explanation to young scientists on how to deal with the issue of ethics in research.
