Physical and Mechanical Measurements lab
The equipment in the laboratory enables the measurement of physical and mechanical properties of materials as well as the preparation of materials with unique properties.
FTIR (Fourier Transformed Infra-red Spectroscopy) is an optical characterization technique. It emits light in the infra-red range towards a sample and detects either the transmitted or reflected light. The system performs a scan of light at wavelengths from 1µm to 25µm and angles of incidence of 0-45 degrees relative to the surface perpendicular axis. The scanning results are presented in a spectrum profile of transmittance or reflection percentages vs. the incident light wavelength or wave number. This technique is utilized, in the infra-red range, for determining optical transparency of devices, optical reflection of mirrors, and optical absorption as a mean for identifying chemical bonds which have unique absorption frequencies.
Dilatometer: elongation measurements as a function of temperature, useful for simulating sintering or determing the coefficient of expansion of a material. Temperature range: R.T.-1600°C.
Thermal Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA): measures weight loss as a function of temperature. Temperature range: R.T.-1100°C.
Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC): measures the difference in the amount of heat required to increase the temperature. Used mainly for identifying the type of reactions (endothermic/exothermic). Temperature range: R.T.-1400°C.
Mechanical Properties (Instron): evaluates the mechanical properties of materials and related parameters using tension, compression, flexure, fatigue, impact and torsion tests.
Hardness and Micro-Hardness Measurements: Surface hardness and related mechanical properties.
