Dr. Alexander Katsman was the senior researcher in the Laboratory of “Physics of the Metal Strength” in Polytechnic Institute, Togliatty, Russia, before joining the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1991. He was a visiting scientist at Max-Plank-Institut fur Eisenforshung, Dusseldorf, Germany in 1994. He is a member of Minerals, Metals&Materials Society (TMS) and Materials Research Society (MRS). From 1998 A. Katsman is a Senior Researcher in the frame of KAMEA program.
The fields of interest are the modeling and simulation of materials processing. In the current study we are seeking to reach stabilization of microstructures in Mg-based alloys, to model nucleation, growth and coarsening of precipitates in binary and ternary alloys. We recognize the strengthening mechanisms in order to enhance creep resistance of the alloys at elevated temperatures. For this purpose we study the microstructure, morphology and phase stability in Mg-Al-Sn-Zn and Mg-RE-Zn-Zr systems. The dependence of precipitation kinetics on the content of the alloying elements in Mg-base alloys was determined. These set the foundation for the development of new Mg alloys.
Additional fields of interest are diffusion phase transformation in Si nanowires, diffusion induced stresses in thin layers, electromigration in thin metal films, low temperature homogenization of layered structures, intergranular crack propagation, grain boundary migration, kinetics of intermetallic disintegration during oxidation.
