Macromolecular Materials Group

Macromolecules are extraordinarily large molecules based upon the assembly of smaller structural units. Synthetic polymers such as Nylon, Teflon, and Kevlar are long chain-like macromolecular assemblies in the form of amorphous random coils or ordered crystalline blocks. The focus of the Macromolecular Materials Laboratory is the design, synthesis, and development of novel macromolecular systems with unique properties.

The relationships between synthesis, structure, processing, and properties are investigated through in-depth characterization on the molecular, nanometer, and micrometer scales using a combination of microscopy, spectroscopy, scattering, and thermal analysis. Recent research has focused on emulsion-templated porous systems with potential for drug delivery, tissue engineering, sustainable energy, water purification, and smart material applications.
